Summary
Friedrich Nietzsche’s work The Twilight of the Idols is a significant reflection of the philosopher’s intellectual world. Written in 1888, this book is one of Nietzsche’s later works and contains the most refined expressions of his philosophical views. In this work, Nietzsche offers a profound critique of Western culture and philosophy and calls for a “revaluation of values.” As the title suggests, the book aims to examine and dismantle the traditional moral and philosophical systems that Nietzsche refers to as “idols.”
In The Twilight of the Idols, Nietzsche endeavors to dismantle the “idols” established by great philosophers and religions, such as Christianity, Platonism, and traditional Western morality. In particular, he argues that Christianity suppresses human nature and elevates weakness and submission to the status of virtues. According to Nietzsche, these traditional moral and religious teachings hinder human potential and dull the human will.
The book also highlights Nietzsche’s famous concepts of the Übermensch (Overman) and the Will to Power (Wille zur Macht). The Übermensch is Nietzsche’s ideal model of a human being—a free individual who rejects traditional morality and value systems and is capable of creating his or her own values. The will to power, on the other hand, emerges as the fundamental driving force of life and symbolizes humanity’s desire to realize its own potential.
Nietzsche also criticizes Plato’s world of ideas, arguing that this concept creates a worldview that belittles life. For this reason, he characterizes teachings such as Platonism and Christianity as “nihilistic” ideas that destroy the vitality of life.

The work In the Twilight of the Idols contains Nietzsche’s most radical critiques and is intellectually highly provocative. Nietzsche delves deep into the roots of Western philosophy, drawing particular attention with his critiques of Christianity and Platonism. The questioning of traditional moral values and the idea that people must reexamine the values imposed upon them form the foundation of Nietzsche’s philosophy.
From a critical perspective, applying Nietzsche’s ideas in the modern world is quite difficult. His critiques of Christianity and Western morality are based on a radical understanding of freedom and value creation. However, Nietzsche’s moral relativism presents a vision of a world in which society’s moral structure would completely dissolve, which could lead to chaos and disorder. Nietzsche’s critiques are structured in a way that excessively glorifies individual freedom, which is controversial in terms of social harmony.
My own interpretation, however, is that this work by Nietzsche is quite significant in that it extols intellectual freedom and the individual’s capacity to create their own values. Nietzsche’s critique of traditional moral systems and religious teachings can be inspiring in terms of the individual realizing their potential and attaining true existential freedom. However, the question of how this freedom would exist within a social order remains unclear in Nietzsche’s philosophy. The conflict between social order and individual freedom highlights the practical difficulties of putting Nietzsche’s radical conception of freedom into practice.
Personal Reflection In my view, Nietzsche’s work The Twilight of the Idols is a text that pushes the boundaries of philosophy and compels one to think. Nietzsche’s critiques of Western culture and moral systems have left a deep impression on my worldview. In particular, the idea that the individual must create their own values has had a significant impact on my understanding of personal development and freedom. However, it is impossible not to question the effects of this radical conception of freedom on social order and ethical structures. While this work makes valuable contributions to the concept of freedom of thought, it leaves open the question of how social order is to be maintained.
