Canetti’s text is heavy, psychologically suffocating, and grotesque. Professor Kien is the very embodiment of intellectual arrogance—a man who understands life only in theoretical terms and is trapped in his own ivory tower. The book shows how knowledge blinds people unless it is transformed into action and reality. It is the tragedy of a man who violates the rule in Cevvela’s manifesto—“Those who know must teach; those who see the path must shine a light”—by keeping his knowledge to himself. Every idea disconnected from reality ultimately consumes its own creator. You watch with horror as seeing too much can turn a person into a haughty zombie. Theory that is not put into action and is not shared is nothing more than a mental illness.
