Hobsbawm writes about history not merely as a chronology, but as a laboratory where humanity has gone mad. He exposes the sea of blood behind the “lofty” myths of ideologies. From fascism to communism, from capitalism to the Cold War, he describes how states mechanized people, reducing them to mere statistics. Once you realize how the ideologies you defend today—the flags and beliefs for which you’ve died—buried millions of people in the 20th century for nothing, you’ll be repulsed by the cold lies of politics. History is the executioner of forgetful societies.
