Summary

An existentialist work that argues that modern man’s greatest problem is not anxiety, but inner emptiness and isolation. It explains how a person who seeks validation from the outside world and constantly follows others loses their sense of self and how they can regain it only by creating their own values.

Cevvela Comment

Rollo May ruthlessly exposes the vast void that popular psychology has obscured. The book proves that people are not actually “themselves,” but merely a patchwork quilt made up of the expectations of the majority around them. This is not a call to awakening, but a call to destruction. It argues that creating your own truths will lead to exclusion and loneliness. This is the antidote to the “gem that remains unpolished because it is silenced by fear and left incomplete because it is not believed,” as described in the Cevvela Manifesto. You will question how many of the decisions you’ve made so far were truly your own, and how many were dictated to you by society. If you’re afraid of being alone, then you never truly existed in the first place.
