Sennett shatters the myth of “flexible work”—the very thing the modern corporate world sells us as “freedom.” The new system demands spineless workers who are unmoored from anything and can jump ship at any moment. While Cevvela argues that character is not a choice but a way of being, this book proves how the system systematically erodes that very character. You’ll realize with horror just how much the “freedom” you thought you gained by constantly changing jobs has actually turned you into a rootless, hollow being. A person who feels no sense of belonging is nothing more than a leaf blowing in the wind.
