Tolstoy’s pen is as cold and precise as a guillotine blade. Ivan Ilyich is a perfect replica of the status slaves who waste their lives today in office buildings, courtrooms, and boardrooms. On his deathbed, he pays the price for betraying his true self in the name of “success.” He whispers that living “like everyone else” is, in fact, not living at all. Ivan’s suffering stems not from his physical illness, but from the hell created in his mind by the question, “What if I’ve lived my life completely wrong?” You watch in horror as those “career” goals—for which you sacrificed your health and dignity—turn into mere scraps of paper in the face of death. A fake life leads to a real death.
