Summary

A collection of psychological essays explaining how modern people can cultivate awareness, a meditative way of life, and their own spiritual growth as a counterbalance to alienation, narcissism, and automation.

Cevvela Comment

In this book, after making his diagnosis, Fromm also prescribes a remedy. His language is wise and comprehensive; he explains how one can find one’s own center. He argues that the root cause of the superficiality we experience in relationships is, first and foremost, our alienation from ourselves. How can a person who cannot be alone with themselves truly see another person? Contrary to false spiritual teachings, he reminds us that becoming self-aware requires a painful and disciplined effort. You come to realize that all the noise distracting you is actually a defense mechanism you’ve created to escape your own silence. One who cannot tolerate their own essence cannot love another.
