Summary

The Nobel Prize-winning author’s masterpiece, which examines the two-system structure (Fast/Automatic and Slow/Analytic) of how our minds work. A scientific revelation that demonstrates just how overconfident we are in our own decisions and how cognitive biases and intuitions systematically mislead us.

Cevvela Comment

Kahneman takes that immense arrogance—the claim that “I am a rational person”—and tears it to shreds on the lab bench. He proves with ruthless data that the “intuitions” leaders place so much trust in are often nothing more than statistical ignorance. Cevvela says that finding the truth is a matter of character; Kahneman, however, proves that the mind is innately prone to self-deception. You’ll realize that all the major decisions you’ve made up to this point were actually made without thinking—out of the ease of System 1 (the automatic mind)—and you’ll feel ashamed of your own intelligence. If you don’t learn to slow down and question your own mind, you’ll remain nothing more than a puppet of your biases.

Reading threshold

Two reflection prompts to note while reading — you do not need to answer them.

  1. Is there a threshold in the text you recognize — do you want to cross it or pause?

  2. After finishing, which line or scene stayed with you — and why?
