Sontag turns the cameras in your pockets into weapons. Cevvela says, “Being useful is not an image.” Sontag, on the other hand, explains that instead of living life, we confine it to nothing more than an “image,” thereby completely severing our connection to reality. Watching someone else’s suffering through a photograph desensitizes us to that suffering. You realize that the photos you take to post on social media are proof that you’re running away from living that moment, rather than immortalizing it. The obsession with recording is, in fact, a way of disappearing from one’s own life.
