Hugo transforms humanity’s wild and hopeless struggle against nature into an epic. Gilliatt is the embodiment of the people of Cevvela—who “have withered away because no one believed in them”—resisting with every fiber of their being. The raw, unrefined will within man stands alone against the ruthlessness of the ocean. It tells how reason and labor can become a miracle in the face of nature’s power. You come to realize just how laughable the so-called “challenges of modern life” are in the face of a single person’s stubborn existence in the middle of the ocean. The person who never gives up strikes fear even into the storm itself.
