The author offers no glimmer of hope, no way out; he merely documents the nightmare. It shows how authority grinds down the human spirit. What is truly terrifying is Josef K.’s inner obedience to that invisible court. Once a person begins to feel like a prisoner, they no longer need a guard. Submitting to the system is not just physical decay, but mental decay as well. It is not the system that crushes you, but the secret approval you give to that system.
