Summary
Necip Fazıl's towering poetic work — a raw account of the torment, existential dread, and fear of death that marked his passage from bohemian wandering to absolute faith, driven by the unsettling rhythm of classical Turkish meter.

Çile is a descent into hell — Turkish poetry walking the edge of losing its mind. It is the record of a terrifying duel between a man and his own nothingness, between a self and whatever we dare call God. Cevvela knows that when the unrefined ore inside a person begins to stir, this kind of anguish is part of what surfaces. Necip Fazıl tells us that the mind hurls itself against its own limits until it bleeds — and that the bleeding is precisely what leads a person toward truth. Reading him, you feel it in your bones: the shallow, distraction-saturated life of modern existence is not peace. It is a madness in disguise. Reason, he insists, can only carry you so far before it runs out of road. Faith, in these pages, is not a quiet harbour. It is a well of fire — and the person falling into it is falling inward.
