Zamyatin shatters that sterile lie of rationality. He paints a picture of the system that normalizes Cevvela’s injustice. The One State is a place where people voluntarily give up their freedoms for the sake of their own security. Zamyatin states plainly: a flawless system must destroy the human spirit; for the spirit is anarchy that cannot be contained by equations. You realize how the modern world—which worships numbers, data, and sterile institutional structures—has turned you into a nameless number. Freedom is the right to make mistakes and to suffer. When you relinquish that right, there is no human left—only a cog in the machine.
